Painting the outside of a house in Berwick
The houses, the weather and the streets here, and what each means for the outside of a house.
Painting under Berwick's big old trees
Council's landscape strategy says the character of the Berwick Township rests on its stands of mature trees, with at least 1,500 canopy trees in the old grid of streets, and council put a Significant Landscape Overlay over the township to protect them. Big trees mean shaded walls and full gutters. Walls under the canopy stay damp and go green, and that growth is cleaned off and the wall left to dry before paint goes on. Gutters are cleaned out before they're painted.
Steep streets and high walls
Council's heritage walk warns that the Berwick area is quite steep, and the village sits on a sloping hill. On a sloping block one side of a house can be a full storey taller than the other. Tell us about the slope when you ask for a quote. High walls are painted from lifts such as cherry pickers where one can be set up safely, and on hot days our painters follow the shade around the house.
Houses in the old township grid
The township was laid out on a grid by Robert Hoddle in the mid nineteenth century, and council's heritage walk lists heritage places such as Glenfalloch in Brisbane Street and Clover Cottage in Manuka Road. An older house carries many layers of paint, often with oil-based enamel on the doors and window frames. Houses from before 1970 can have lead-based paint in the older layers, and Aussie Painting doesn't do lead paint removal, so have it tested first if you're not sure. If your house is heritage-listed, tell us at the start.
First repaints on 1990s and 2000s estate houses
Berwick's population tripled in less than 15 years. Houses filled the land between the freeway, the railway and the old Princes Highway, and by 2010 growth had reached Clyde North's farmland. Wikipedia names estates such as Timbarra and Alira. Houses from those years are now twenty to thirty years old. Paint on fascias and garage doors fades, and render shows cracks at corners and window heads. Cracks are filled, chalky surfaces washed and sealed, and the colour carried round the whole house.

Don't pay to paint your Berwick home twice.
In Berwick, like anywhere, the cheapest quote skips the prep, uses cheap paint and does one coat. It looks fine for a few months, then it peels, and you're paying someone to strip it and start again.

Exterior Repaint in Berwick
In Berwick, most houses were built from the 1970s on, most of them in the 1990s and 2000s. Houses from before 1970 can have lead-based paint in the older layers. Aussie Painting doesn't do lead paint removal, so if you're not sure, have it tested before any sanding. We don't start outside work when rain or heavy dew is due, and on hot days we work in the shade, so the paint goes on and dries the way it should.

Berwick painting questions, answered.
Quotes and price
Do you paint houses in Berwick?
Yes. We paint homes in Berwick and the suburbs around it, inside and out. Call or send the form and we'll come and look at the job.
How do I get a quote?
Call us or send the form with a line about the job and where you are. We'll arrange a time to look at it and give you a written quote. The quote is free.
How much does it cost to paint a house?
It depends on the size of the area, how much preparation the surfaces need, their condition, access and height, and how many coats it takes. We don't guess over the phone: we look at the job and put the price in writing, with each of those explained.
Do you take a deposit?
Yes, but only enough to cover the materials for your job. Everything else about payment is set out in your written quote before we start.
The job itself
Who actually does the painting?
Daniel's team of trade-qualified painters. Daniel runs the business and is your contact from the quote to the final walk-through.
What paint do you use?
Dulux, on every job. We pick the right Dulux product for the surface, whether that's a wet-area ceiling, weatherboards or a factory wall.
What time of year is best for exterior painting?
Dry, mild weather. Paint needs a dry surface and a temperature in the manufacturer's range while it cures, so exterior work is planned around the forecast. You get a planned schedule, and if rain moves the dates we tell you.
Do weatherboards need to be stripped back before painting?
Not always. Sound paint is sanded and spot-primed; flaking or failed paint is taken back until it's sound. We'll tell you which your house needs when we look at it.
Peace of mind
Are you insured?
Fully insured, $20 million public liability, on every job.
Do you guarantee your work?
Yes. We back our work with a 7-year workmanship guarantee on interior walls and ceilings. The guarantee covers peeling, flaking or blistering of paint we applied, caused by our preparation or application: 7 years on eligible interior walls and ceilings, 12 months on other eligible painted surfaces, and no fixed period on decks, floors, paths, stains, oils and clear finishes. It stays with the customer who paid for the job and doesn't pass to a new owner. Other conditions apply. The full terms are on our guarantee page.
When can I reach you?
Answering the phone 7 days. Call 0481 737 626, or send the form any time.
Do you paint near Berwick too?
Yes. We also paint in Frankston, Frankston South, Seaford, Langwarrin and Carrum Downs, and right across Frankston & Mornington Peninsula.
