Why weatherboards need more prep
Timber boards move as they wet and dry, and every board has a bottom edge where water sits. That's where paint fails first. Good weatherboard painting spends most of its time on the boards themselves: scraping, sanding, filling splits and priming bare timber before a top coat goes near them.
Stripped back or sanded?
Not every weatherboard house needs taking back to bare timber. Sound paint can be sanded and spot-primed. Paint that's flaking in sheets, or lifting across whole boards, has to come off until what's underneath is sound. You'll know which your house needs from the quote.
Boards near the coast
Salt air and sea wind dry out and chalk the paint on the weather side of a house. Our crews don't start outside work when rain or heavy dew is due, so the boards are dry when they're painted, and on hot days they work in the shade.
Older weatherboard homes
Older houses can have oil-based paint on the trims and, underneath, lead paint in the old layers. We check the trims when we quote, and it's worth asking any painter about the old layers before work starts. We don't take on lead paint removal.

How much does it cost to paint a house?
It depends on the size of the area, how much preparation the surfaces need, their condition, access and height, and how many coats it takes. We don't guess over the phone: we look at the job and put the price in writing, with each of those explained.
Do you take a deposit?
Yes, but only enough to cover the materials for your job. Everything else about payment is set out in your written quote before we start.
How long will the job take?
It depends on the size of the job, how much prep it needs and, outside, the weather. Before we start you get a planned schedule, and if anything moves the dates we tell you.

What paint do you use?
Dulux, on every job. We pick the right Dulux product for the surface, whether that's a wet-area ceiling, weatherboards or a factory wall.
What time of year is best for exterior painting?
Dry, mild weather. Paint needs a dry surface and a temperature in the manufacturer's range while it cures, so exterior work is planned around the forecast. You get a planned schedule, and if rain moves the dates we tell you.
Do weatherboards need to be stripped back before painting?
Not always. Sound paint is sanded and spot-primed; flaking or failed paint is taken back until it's sound. We'll tell you which your house needs when we look at it.
