Painting the outside of a house in Mount Martha
The houses, the weather and the streets here, and what each means for the outside of a house.
Repainting render on the estate houses
Mount Martha was a holiday village of 615 people in 1961. The Shire's property records show when the houses came: 20% in the 1980s, 19% in the 1990s, 27% in the 2000s and 15% after 2010, with the older streets in the south-west and the newest towards Mornington. The old Balcombe army camp, east of Uralla Road, became housing in the 1990s. The Shire describes the estate houses from the 1990s on as generally single storey, in brick with a rendered finish. Render is where these houses show their age. It chalks on the sunny sides and opens up hairline cracks. Those are filled first, because paint alone won't bridge them.
Painting two storey houses on the granite slopes
The mount is a granite rise of 161 metres, and from Balcombe Point to Martha Point the coast is cliff with no beach. Housing has taken most of the slope anyway. The Shire's character study describes these streets as steep, with contemporary houses in rendered concrete, often two storeys, with glass fencing. A house high on that slope faces the bay with nothing in between, so wind, salt and afternoon sun land on the same walls. Galvanised gutters and downpipes are primed before painting on coastal jobs. For the high side of a house on a slope, our painters work from lifts such as cherry pickers.
Oiled timber, painted block and old paint on the early houses
Older pockets sit among the new. The streets north of Hearn Road, Spencer and Barrow among them, were a returned soldiers estate created in 1948. The Golf Links Estate, sold the same year, became Irvine Avenue, Leggat Crescent and Prescott Avenue, where rows of Monterey pine from the old fairways still stand. The 1920s left modest holiday houses as well as grand ones. The Shire's heritage study says a number of Mount Martha buildings are concrete block, most of them painted over, and records a 1930s lodge in Osborne Drive whose owners oiled the timber boards every year until they tired of it and painted them. Oiled or stained timber needs different prep from painted timber, so tell us what is on yours. We don't do lead paint removal, so have old paint on a house from before 1970 tested before it is sanded.
Paint controls and muted colour rules
Most of Mount Martha's entries in the Heritage Overlay have external paint controls, among them houses on the Esplanade and in Dominion Road, Osborne Drive, Bay Road and Two Bays Crescent. Separately, the Shire's design overlays for the bayside, coastal and bushland parts of the township all carry one rule: cladding and trim in muted tones of green, brown, beige or other approved colours, and finishes under 40 per cent reflectivity, roofs included. Ask the Shire which overlay covers your street before you choose colours. We quote whatever they approve.
Green walls and full gutters near the bush
Mount Martha Park is 53 hectares of native bushland, The Briars is 230 hectares, and the Balcombe Estuary reserves run from Nepean Highway to the coast. The Shire notes high tree cover in the streets east of the highway. Under trees the south side of a house stays damp, goes green and fills its gutters with leaves, and all of that has to be cleaned off and dry before paint. 14.3% of dwellings were empty on census night in 2021, against 11.1% for Victoria, so plenty of houses here go unwatched for weeks. We don't start outside work when rain or heavy dew is due, and on hot days our painters move around the house with the shade.

In Mount Martha, like anywhere, the cheapest quote skips the prep, uses cheap paint and does one coat. It looks fine for a few months, then it peels, and you're paying someone to strip it and start again.

Exterior Repaint in Mount Martha
In Mount Martha, most houses were built after World War II, and quickly through the 1990s and 2000s. Houses from before 1970 can have lead-based paint in the older layers. Aussie Painting doesn't do lead paint removal, so if you're not sure, have it tested before any sanding. Mount Martha sits on Port Phillip Bay, and salt air is hard on exterior paint and bare metal. About 15% of homes in Mount Martha are townhouses or semi-detached. For shared walls, fences and outside areas we can quote the owners corporation or strata manager directly. On coastal jobs we prime galvanised gutters and downpipes before they're painted. We don't start outside work when rain or heavy dew is due, and on hot days we work in the shade, so the paint goes on and dries the way it should.

Mount Martha painting questions, answered.
Quotes and price
Do you paint houses in Mount Martha?
Yes. We paint homes in Mount Martha and the suburbs around it, inside and out. Call or send the form and we'll come and look at the job.
How do I get a quote?
Call us or send the form with a line about the job and where you are. We'll arrange a time to look at it and give you a written quote. The quote is free.
How much does it cost to paint a house?
It depends on the size of the area, how much preparation the surfaces need, their condition, access and height, and how many coats it takes. We don't guess over the phone: we look at the job and put the price in writing, with each of those explained.
Do you take a deposit?
Yes, but only enough to cover the materials for your job. Everything else about payment is set out in your written quote before we start.
The job itself
Who actually does the painting?
Daniel's team of trade-qualified painters. Daniel runs the business and is your contact from the quote to the final walk-through.
What paint do you use?
Dulux, on every job. We pick the right Dulux product for the surface, whether that's a wet-area ceiling, weatherboards or a factory wall.
What time of year is best for exterior painting?
Dry, mild weather. Paint needs a dry surface and a temperature in the manufacturer's range while it cures, so exterior work is planned around the forecast. You get a planned schedule, and if rain moves the dates we tell you.
Peace of mind
Are you insured?
Fully insured, $20 million public liability, on every job.
Do you guarantee your work?
Yes. We back our work with a 7-year workmanship guarantee on interior walls and ceilings. The guarantee covers peeling, flaking or blistering of paint we applied, caused by our preparation or application: 7 years on eligible interior walls and ceilings, 12 months on other eligible painted surfaces, and no fixed period on decks, floors, paths, stains, oils and clear finishes. It stays with the customer who paid for the job and doesn't pass to a new owner. Other conditions apply. The full terms are on our guarantee page.
When can I reach you?
Answering the phone 7 days. Call 0481 737 626, or send the form any time.
Do you paint near Mount Martha too?
Yes. We also paint in Mornington, Safety Beach, Dromana, Mount Eliza and Frankston South, and right across Frankston & Mornington Peninsula.
