Salt on gutters, balustrades and garage doors by Marine Drive
Safety Beach started around 1912 with blocks sold off Marine Drive and Dromana Parade. Marine Drive is still the coast road, running between the houses and the foreshore, so the front row looks straight across Port Phillip with nothing to break the wind. Timber cottage, newer rebuild or old fibro we don't take on
The settlement grew quickly in the late 1940s, and Victorian Places notes that by the 1990s its first generation of cheaply built holiday homes was being replaced. Some survive. From 2004 the low ground behind the beach was dug out to make Martha Cove, 94 hectares with 17 hectares of waterways and room for about 1,150 waterside homes. The Shire calls it a canal-based development. A house there has a marina at the back fence and the bay a short walk from the front, so every side is a weather side.
