Glen Eira's background report for the Bentleigh structure plan describes the strip as one and two storey buildings, some with a parapet, on both sides of Centre Road with big car parks behind. The rear of the shops faces the car parks
The same report says the backs of the shops on both sides of Centre Road face large car parks that customers walk through, and the structure plan wants the laneways opened up with cafes. A back wall that customers see should look as good as the front: roller doors, steel stairs and downpipes get rust treated and primed, and the wall is washed and painted in one colour.
A station rebuilt below ground at the end of the strip
Wikipedia says Bentleigh station closed on 4 June 2016 and reopened on 29 August that year rebuilt below ground, with the Centre Road crossing gone. Glen Eira's plan lists the refurbished station and the removed crossing as a strength of the centre. Next to new concrete and glass an old shopfront stands out. Old paint is washed, chalky surfaces sealed, and a fresh scheme chosen to suit the heritage strip.
