Limestone shops on Ocean Beach Road
The bay end of Ocean Beach Road is built of local limestone. The four-storey Continental Hotel went up in 1875, Stringers Stores in 1886 and 1892, the Oriental Coffee Palace in 1887 and 1888 and the Athenaeum in 1894. The Shire's heritage study says most of the shops followed between 1900 and 1910, the later ones with red-brick quoining. On these buildings the stone and face brick stay unpainted. The work is in the joinery, verandahs and shopfront frames.

The Sorrento Commercial Precinct sits in the Heritage Overlay with external paint controls on, and Stringers Stores, the former Post and Telegraph Office and the former Oriental Coffee Palace are listed one by one as well. The Shire says a permit is needed to repaint the outside there, to paint any surface never painted before, and for paintwork that acts as an advertisement.
